One of the personal characteristics that my friends and family admire about me is that when I say I am going to do something, I do it. Almost every goal I set for myself, I accomplish. My follow through game is tight! I follow through on small things, as well as big things. At any given time, I am working on some kind of plan or goal, it never stops. I just keep on moving forward, no matter what.
I have overcome many challenges in life, and despite these challenges I am always focused on accomplishing my goals. When I am working on something, my friends and family will say “well I know if anybody can do it, you can!” or something like “girl, you move so fast. You don’t play!” One time I was looking for a place to stay, my aunt told me about some new apartments on the eastside. By the time I went over her house that evening I had gone to the apartments, found out they were only for seniors, used that lead to find their management company, called them right as they were closing and the manager answered (who said she almost never answers the phone) and got her to secure me a unit. My aunt was in unbelief! I took her with me that very same Friday to pay my deposit and sign the lease. The next day I moved into a brand new house. Those of you who live in Detroit know these homes that are rental properties all throughout the east side of the city. I was one of the first people to move in, and lived in that house for five years.
Next, I purchased my first home, it was my dream house. I got married in May 2008 and we bought a house in September 2008. That made people’s head spin too! Then after I got divorced lol…..oh well it happens, I held up that house on my own for five more years! I continued to keep it up through getting laid off from my job, getting divorced, and working on a Master’s degree. Despite it all I finished school in the mist of those trials. Another story, just last year after facing foreclosure, I sold my house in literally one week!!! Who sells a home in Detroit in this day and age in one week……..nobody except me! I got enough to pay off the house and walk away with a profit. Won’t He do it!!!!
When I graduated with my MSW, I decided that I wanted to work at COTS homeless shelter. It may have taken me from 2011 to 2015, but in January 2015 I was hired! I found my way into that organization and have secured my place in the COTS family. In June of this year, I received my first promotion to Lead Coach. Notice I said “first promotion” because there will be plenty more to come, trust me! By the way, I should mention during the interim before getting into COTS I worked at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, which is a company that is hard to get into. I worked there until I left for COTS, and had a great experience.
At the beginning of this year I decided I wanted to start a motivational blog for women. I was turning 40 and instead of celebrating it with a typical party, I wanted to do something meaningful that would help me towards my goals. One of my goals is to be a motivational speaker and writer, and I decided to start with a blog. I had no idea how to do it, but I figured it out (with the help of my wonderful friends I may add) and well…….you are reading it right now! It launched in May on my 40th birthday, just as planned!
And all of these are recent stories. We won’t even get into having a child at 14 and still graduating high school in the top ten percent of my class, suffering the loss of a child which was the hardest thing I have ever been through, having a mentally ill mother and coming through that darkness.
I do not tell you these stories to brag or boast at all, that is not my goal nor my heart. I tell you these stories to encourage you and as an example that when you set goals and have dreams for yourself, you have to work hard and be consistent in order to bring them to fruition. I also want you to think about something, when your friends and family think of you, what do they think of? Someone who is all talk…..always talking about what you are going to do; or someone who is about action……always completing things and coming out on top? Hmmm think about it.
Being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6 (emphasis mine)
Staying focused on your goals also helps you to avoid drama and negative energy. I am so busy working on my goals that I literally do not have time for drama. Being focused and driven causes negative people and energy to evaporate. You do not even have to remove them, it happens naturally. Negative energy feeds off of other negative energy. When you have a positive light, it is irritating to a negative person and they will not want to be around you. Your positive light will draw other positive people. If most of the people around you are negative, draining, and full of drama, you need to take a look in the mirror. Produce some positive changes in your life, and then you will start to draw some better people into your life.
Some people are inept at completing tasks and goals. They are either one extreme or the other. On one end they may be despondent – have lost all hope and have no courage. Or they are delusional – they are going to be an entrepreneur, have a restaurant, be a clothing designer, become a nurse, and be a millionaire by next year. This is all with no education, no knowledge about any of these industries, and they couldn’t put a coherent sentence together even if their life depended on it!!!
I run into people all the time, five, ten, twenty years later, and they are still in the same position in life they were before. Still saying they are going back to school, going to open a business, going to become a doctor, actor, nurse, or pastor. Always “going to.” They hate their job and are going to leave, only they are still there. They hate where they live, yet they still live there 10 years later. They do not like the relationship with their spouse and are going to leave, nope……still there lol! The next year, it’s the same story!
In order to be about action and completing goals, you have to think long term and practice strategic planning. You can not only focus on short term gratification. You also need courage. Launching my blog was scary. I had to research, plan, and execute, all while having a very hectic job. I was telling the world my story, including the ugly parts. Would people like it? Would they judge my past? Would they like my style of writing? I was scared, but I did it anyway, right through the fear.
So, what about you? Are you all talk, or are you about action? Are you moving forward in life or standing still? If you are in a good place and standing still, great! That is a completely different story. But if you are not where you want to be, have a business you want to start, want to go back to school, desire to move to a different city or state, have always wanted to start a non-profit organization, want to get rid of that dead weight of a husband or wife, then you need to get moving. If you have a dream and are not doing anything about it, that is a problem. Sit down, make a plan, and start executing it tomorrow! The world is waiting on your greatness, and so am I.
