Quitting while you are ahead, is not the same thing as quitting. I got this concept from the movie American Gangster. If you have seen the movie you know that Frank Lucas was a drug dealer who became famous for shipping heroin directly from Thailand into the U.S. It was groundbreaking at the time that a black man in America had a direct connection with no middle man. His drug supplier in Thailand advised Frank that “quitting while you are ahead, is not the same as quitting.” He was trying to tell Frank it was time for him to stop. Frank didn’t listen, and the next shipment is when he got caught. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkNiUrWwXBY
As many of you know, part of my story was that I was Stripper for 3 years in my early twenties. One of my best friends was as well. This person was like a sister to me and we had been friends since kindergarten. If you read my blog post “Do It Scared” http://latoniawalker.com/2016/09/04/do-it-scared/ then you are aware that I stopped stripping after attending a Christian Women’s Conference. I always knew that I would not be in that environment for ever, it was not my lifestyle, it was a means to an end.
My friend and I were both already Christians and prayed many times that God would give us a way out of it. I was in college at the time, however I still had a ways to go. Quitting was not an easy decision. My friend was in school for nursing, and she also had started a business. She was very smart, beautiful, passionate, she was the entire package. Although she had these attributes, she also had negative influences in her life, and was progressively becoming more and more involved in a dangerous lifestyle. I quit. She didn’t. She was killed.
I am no angel and I have been involved in several things that I am not proud of. I have also had friends or been involved with other people who have done things that I am not proud of. I was a stripper and I have dated men who sold drugs. I know some people who made it out. I know more who didn’t. The only reason that I made it out is because of God and his Grace and Mercy on my life.
Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. ~ Hebrews 4:16
God gives us many chances to stop our mess, it is up to us to listen. Maybe you’re in the street life, selling or using drugs, cheating on your spouse, not taking care of your health, neglecting your children, stealing other people’s identity, abusing your spouse or children, abusing children, the disabled or the elderly on your job……whatever it is, now is the time to quit while you’re ahead.
If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land. ~ 2 Chronicles 7:14
If you know me, you know that I come with no judgment. That is one of the reasons I am thankful for my “past” because I have no room to judge anyone else. I do the work that I do strictly out of love. God delivered me, so I in return have dedicated my life to helping other women. If you are involved in a lifestyle that is not positive and you want to change, I encourage you to make steps towards change TODAY! God has kept you this far and covered you in His Grace and Mercy. Please don’t wait until it is too late. Tomorrow is not promised. Don’t let grace run out!
